Nairobi, 31 March 2023 – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched the Young Talent Pipeline, a new initiative aimed at increasing the diversity of experiences and solutions to solve the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss and pollution and waste. UNEP, in partnership with the UN Volunteers (UNV) programme, is actively seeking young, passionate, and skilled talent from all over the world to join the organization and become the environmental leaders of tomorrow. This online recruitment drive will last until 15 May 2023.

      The global economy relies heavily on natural resource extraction, which has serious impacts on the environment and human health. We support positive change in the extractive sector’s governance and business practices. We aim to make minerals, oil and gas work for all, with minimal harm and many benefits.

      If current trends continue, the global per capita use of natural resources will increase by 70 per cent by 2050. We promote the transition to economies that are low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.

      UN Environment Programme (UNEP) collaborates with a growing network of centres to complement and leverage its expertise, and improve the overall delivery of the organization’s work. Activities include delivery of projects, mobilization of resources, activities within their specialised areas and the expansion of UNEP´s advocacy role.

      Intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. In February 2022, at the resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), a historic resolution (5/14) was adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment with the ambition to complete the negotiations by end of 2024. The instrument is to be based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic. The INC will consider how to promote sustainable production and consumption of plastics from product design to environmentally sound waste management through resource efficiency and circular economy approaches. The rapidly increasing levels of plastic pollution represent a serious global environmental issue that negatively impacts the environmental, social, economic and health dimensions of sustainable development. Under a business-as-usual scenario and in the absence of necessary interventions, the amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems could nearly triple from some 9–14 million tonnes per year in 2016 to a projected 23–37 million tons per year by 2040.
